A leak can be defined in one of two ways: the flow rate at a given test pressure, or the hole size. Because the size of a leak (or more than one small leak) can rarely be determined directly, flow measurement is the method of choice to characterize the leak’s effective size. To evaluate your leak test system’s ability to identify the effective size of a leak, it is useful to use a leak orifice with a known flow rate at a specified pressure. Alternatively, a leak orifice with a known orifice diameter can be used. In addition, a leak orifice can be used as a daily verification tool to confirm the consistency of your leak test system.
