對軟的不透氣包裝使用限制平板有兩個目的：一是限制測試包裝的內部體積，可以增加測試靈敏度，多數情況是客戶所期望的。內部體積越小，需要的充氣時間越短，從而減少氣壓衰減測試時間。二使用限制平板在密封強度測試過程中，可以平衡包裝密封上的應力。包裝密封上的應力變得更均衡，並提供對最弱密封區域更一致的測試。使用不同間隙的平板能為不同包裝配置提供優良的靈敏度。
